What is 3D Printing?

What is 3D printing?

3D printing is a process used to make three-dimensional objects. Additive processes are used in a way where successive layers of material are laid down under computer control. Objects can be just about any shape or size, and are referenced from a 3D model. 3D models can be created using CAD (computer aided drawing) software or using a 3D scanner. The 3D object is then converted to a STL or OBJ file which is read by the 3D printer to be able to print it.

The first company to emerge into the consumer 3D printing market was a company called MakerBot. They focused on ready to use out of the box consumer in home 3D printers.
